What ice fishing line to use?

Using the right fishing line for the right type of fishing and environment plays a huge part on if you will catch fish or not. First you need to consider the environment you want to fish in. Weather it be shore, boat, ice, dip, spear fishing. You also have to think about what type of fish you want to catch. Heavier fish require stronger pound test fishing line. The fishing lure size should resemble the natural bait size of the target fish. Typically, the bigger the bait, the bigger the catch so you will need a stronger pound test line. Once you figure out your fishing environment and the type of lure and fish you want to catch, you can now have an idea of what type of line you need.

For example ice fishing, because you are on the ice directly over your fishing hole, allows you to be able to use a small pound test fishing line. Also the target fish during ice fishing is typically smaller then any other type of fishing. With these factors during ice fishing, most anglers use a smaller pound test fishing line. Typically 3-6 pound test fishing line for ice fishing.

The type of fishing rod and drag setting play a part in the type on fishing line you should use as well.

For example ice fishing, because anglers use a smaller ice fishing pole, enable you to use a smaller pound test fishing line. Setting the right drag allows the fish to pull the line while your fighting to keep the line from stretching or snapping.
