Ice Fishing Walleye?
Walleye are nocturnal fish, mostly feeding in the dawn of morning and dusk of night. Getting out on the ice at these times can be dangerous. Never ice fish alone and always bring a test spud.
Types of baits that can be used are small pencil plugs, spinners, jig heads even spoons. I typically like to use live bait on jig heads or spoons. I find that using just the minnow head works best for catching walleye. Using a dead stick with just a small plug helps with luring the walleye in. While using your main rod jigging bouncing the bait off the bottom slowly is usually the best technique.
The best walleye to keep and eat are around 15 to 17 inches. Before heading out and doing any fishing, please check with local DNR for walleye regulations and fishing reports in your area. Good luck, bundle up and stay safe out there on the ice.
