Ice Fishing Walleye?

Walleye are nocturnal fish, mostly feeding in the dawn of morning and dusk of night. Getting out on the ice at these times can be dangerous. Never ice fish alone and always bring a test spud.  Types of baits that can be used are small pencil plugs, spinners, jig heads even spoons. I typically like to use live bait on jig heads or spoons. I find that using just the minnow head works best for catching walleye. Using a dead stick with just a small plug helps with luring the walleye in. While using your main rod jigging bouncing the bait off the bottom slowly is usually the best technique.  The best walleye to keep and eat are around 15 to 17 inches. B efore heading out and doing any fishing, please  check with local DNR for walleye regulations and fishing reports in your area. Good luck, bundle up and stay safe out there on the ice.

What ice fishing line to use?

Using the right fishing line for the right type of fishing and environment plays a huge part on if you will catch fish or not. First you need to consider the environment you want to fish in. Weather it be shore, boat, ice, dip, spear fishing. You also have to think about what type of fish you want to catch. Heavier fish require stronger pound test fishing line. The fishing lure size should resemble the natural bait size of the target fish. Typically, the bigger the bait, the bigger the catch so you will need a stronger pound test line. Once you figure out your fishing environment and the type of lure and fish you want to catch, you can now have an idea of what type of line you need. For example ice fishing , because you are on the ice directly over your fishing hole, allows you to be able to use a small pound test fishing line. Also the target fish during ice fishing is typically smaller then any other type of fishing. With these factors during ice fishing, most anglers use a smaller p...

Are ice fishing tents waterproof?

Most ice fishing hubs   are waterproof. You can check your fishing hut but simply dumping water directly on it. The water should bead off. If the water soaks in, your  ice fishing shanty is not waterproof. You can buy treatment products to apply your shanty if it is not waterproof.  The advantages of using an waterproof ice fishing hub is that it will protect you from the  fierce cold blowing winds. They also protect you from hard rains and snowy blizzards.  Fishing from inside an ice house gives you an advantage over other anglers not using  an ice fishing shelter. When inside and zipped up, your ice house environment will will stay comfortable and warm. Even if you don't use some type of heater warmer.  Keeping yourself warm during an ice fishing outage is one of the keys  to catching more fish faster.
